Editorial Standards
Editorial Policy
Our goal is to help you make a better first decision with verifiable records, clear calculations, and honest limitations. A lender's marketing claim is not treated as proof.
1. What we publish
Big Brain Funding publishes business funding research, lender directories, tax program education, provider comparisons, screeners, and owner reviews. Content is educational. It is not a credit decision, funding offer, professional recommendation, or substitute for advice from a licensed professional who knows your facts.
2. Source standards
We prefer sources in this order:
- Government datasets, regulations, agency guidance, filings, and official registries.
- Audited filings and regulated institution reports.
- Official provider websites, disclosures, licensing pages, and program documents.
- High-quality secondary reporting when a primary source is unavailable.
Major quantitative claims should identify the source and relevant date. Provider-published claims are labeled as provider-published and are not presented as independent verification. Anonymous marketing pages, copied listicles, and unsourced summaries are not acceptable evidence for a ranking.
3. How rankings and comparisons work
A ranking must state what is measured, the time period, important exclusions, and any minimum sample threshold. We do not convert missing data into a favorable score. We do not call a lender "best" based on payment, brand familiarity, or an unpublished opinion.
SBA rankings use public federal loan records and the rules described in ourSBA Data Methodology. Other directories state their own inclusion criteria and sources on the relevant page.
4. Accuracy, dates, and limitations
- Pages identify when data was retrieved or the period it covers when that timing matters.
- Historical activity is not described as current underwriting criteria.
- Rates in public loan records are not described as live quotes or total borrowing cost.
- Missing fields and material dataset limitations are disclosed rather than estimated.
- Illustrative calculations state their assumptions and are not labeled as qualification results.
5. Commercial independence
A lender or partner cannot pay to change its position in an editorial SBA ranking. Payment does not remove a negative fact supported by reliable evidence. Sponsored material, paid placement, and compensated referral relationships must be labeled clearly. Read ourAdvertising and Partner Disclosure for details.
6. Reviews and user submissions
Owner reviews are screened before publication. Reviewers attest that the submission describes their own experience and that they were not compensated for it. Reviews remain opinions and are kept separate from public-record metrics. Lenders cannot pay to add, edit, or remove a review. We may request documentation, withhold unverifiable claims, protect personal information, or remove content that violates the submission terms.
7. Automation and artificial intelligence
Software and artificial intelligence may help organize records, calculate metrics, identify inconsistencies, draft explanations, or format pages. These tools are not treated as sources. Published factual claims should remain traceable to a named source, an explicit assumption, or a reproducible calculation. We correct tool-assisted errors under the same policy as any other error.
8. Updates and corrections
We update pages when source data changes, when a provider publishes material new information, or when an error is verified. Material corrections receive an updated date or correction note where appropriate. Minor spelling, grammar, formatting, and link repairs may be made without a correction note. See the Corrections Policy to report an issue.
